How to remove tracking parameters from any link
To remove tracking from a link, you have three options: paste it into PruneTheLink's homepage, prepend prunethe.link/ to the URL before sharing, or use the native Share button after cleaning. All three strip the same parameters and take less than a second. The cleaned link is identical in function — it resolves to the same page, post, or video.
Try the cleaner
Or prepend prunethe.link/<your-link>
Remove tracking from a shared link
- Copy the link. Tap Share or Copy link in the app that generated the URL (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.). Copy the link to your clipboard.
- Paste into PruneTheLink. Open prunethe.link in any browser and paste the link into the input field. Or on mobile, tap the Paste button shortcut if offered.
- Tap Prune. PruneTheLink resolves any short URL, strips all known tracking parameters (igshid, fbclid, si, utm_source, and dozens more), and shows the cleaned URL plus the list of parameters removed.
- Copy or share the clean link. Tap Copy, Open, or Share on the cleaned result. The cleaned link resolves to the same content but without any attribution tokens.
The faster way: the prefix trick
Instead of pasting, you can prepend prunethe.link/ directly to any URL. For example, prunethe.link/https://tiktok.com/@user/video/123?refer=abc redirects straight to the cleaned URL. This works for any link from any platform — useful for sharing a link with a friend without pre-cleaning it yourself.
What gets stripped
PruneTheLink removes all standard UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content, utm_id), common affiliate and referral parameters (ref, referrer, source, click_id, affiliate_id, partner), and every platform-specific tracker for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter / X, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and Pinterest.
What doesn't get touched
PruneTheLink only strips known tracking parameters. Functional parameters — YouTube's v= (video ID) and t= (timestamp), playlist list=, article ?page=2, search q=— are all preserved. The underlying URL path is untouched.
Extra privacy on redirects
When PruneTheLink redirects you to the cleaned URL, it sets a Referrer-Policy: no-referrer header. That means the destination site doesn't see that you came from prunethe.link — or anywhere. Combined with a privacy-respecting browser and uBlock Origin, it's a strong baseline against share-link tracking.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there an extension or app?
- Not yet — PruneTheLink is a stateless web tool. The prefix trick (prepending prunethe.link/) works from anywhere and doesn't require installing anything.
- Does PruneTheLink log the URLs I clean?
- No. URLs are cleaned in-memory and discarded. There's no database, no cookies, no analytics on cleaned URLs, and no logs.
- Can I use this for short links (vt.tiktok.com, bit.ly)?
- Yes. PruneTheLink follows redirects first, resolves the final URL, then strips tracking. You get back the cleaned full-length URL.
